Agile & Scrum in software development: how does it work?

April 14, 2026·VirtuoLab

What is Agile development?

Agile is a way of working in short iterations (sprints) rather than planning everything up front. You build, test, learn and adjust — continuously.

Why Agile?

The traditional "waterfall" approach works like this:

1Specify everything → 2. Build everything → 3. Test → 4. Deliver

The problem: when you see the end product after 6 months, it often isn't what you meant. Changes are expensive.

Agile flips it around:

Work in 2-week sprints
A working product after every sprint
Continuous feedback from the client
Flexibility to steer along the way

How does Scrum work?

Scrum is the most widely used Agile framework. The roles:

Product owner: decides WHAT gets built (priorities)

Development team: decides HOW it gets built

Scrum master: facilitates the process, removes obstacles

The Scrum cycle

Sprint planning (Monday)

The team selects tasks for the coming sprint from the backlog.

Daily standup (daily, 15 min)

Three questions: what did you do yesterday? What will you do today? Any blockers?

Sprint review (end of sprint)

Demo of the delivered work to the client. Gather feedback.

Sprint retrospective (end of sprint)

The team discusses: what went well? What can be better?

Benefits for you as a client

1Interim results — you see progress every 2 weeks
2Steering — you can change priorities without extra cost
3Transparency — you know exactly where things stand
4Quality — continuous testing prevents major bugs

At VirtuoLab we work Agile by default. Experience it yourself — request a project.
